The generals on both sides were very concerned about this display of peaceful intentions. They discovered that what allowed this to happen was the same troops in the line opposite each other, so that trust could develop. Their way of handling this was to move troops around so that trust could not develop.
If you meditate on this, you can see other implications.
There is a great movie about this called, Joyeux Noel - it's a foreign film from 2005 with subtitles - the language is in French, German and Scottish - they probably should have included subtitles for the Scottish as well! ;)
