Neil Folberg's wonderful book 'Celestial Night' with stunning black and white night time shots of the Holy Land would make for a wonderful Christmas gift. Here are two of those pictures-- firstly the shot of the Gush Halav synagogue ruins at night, and secondly the shot in Jerusalem from behind the Dome of the Rock with a meteor passing overheard (which image deserves a (*wow*). This blog post does not do justice to these and many other stunning images in this nice coffee table book.
Enjoy.
Howdy Dr Witherington,
ReplyDeleteRecently I went to a presentation on the star of Bethlehem presented by Frederick A. Larson. He believes he may have found the star that the magi saw plus when Jesus was born. From what I hear PBS and CBS will be having him on their shows.
I am curious as to whether or not you have seen this website and what you might think of his ideas. http://www.bethlehemstar.net/
Blessings to you,
Hi Ben, you're right, those are fantastic pictures, but that's a comet over the Dome, not a meteor.
ReplyDeleteRight you are, it is a comet--- but hey I am not an astronomer :)

William I think that the bit about the journey from jerusalem to bethlehem and the star hanging out over the very house where Jesus was born rules out a star, at least for that part of the journey. It was more likely an angel, but then the ancients thought stars were angels, in many cases.

this is one of those annoying comments that have nothing to do with the current post. but my wife and i were discussing the whole "God helped me kill that man who entered my church" in Colorado on Sunday. she obviously saved lots of lives but at the expense of another life.
ReplyDeletejust curious if we are going to get your opinion in another post on this subject. i'm sure it would generate some good discussion.
